Does IDC offer training to its employees?

AnswerYes. We expect employees to come in with a willingness to learn new skills. Working within the company you will be expected to learn on your own and under the direction of existing employees in regards to our business processes, engineering and technical knowledge and other topic areas. IDC prefers to promote from within, hence we offer learning paths to advance your career. Other opportunities for professional advancement may be possible depending on availability.

What skills and traits do you look for in new employees?

AnswerIn short, we look for the top 10% of students. Typical employees have been deeply involved in leadership positions, design teams, and carry a rigorous course load. Many people we recruit have a deep understanding of some skill, whether it be something in the hard sciences like micro controller programming or in the field of leadership.

Can I take classes and work for IDC at the same time?

AnswerYes. In fact, we expect many of our employees that still attend school to do the same. We are aware of the responsibilities of classes and the last minute time requirements associated with them and are flexible to that effect.

Why did you start IDC?

AnswerIDC was created to fulfill three missions: build the skills and talent of employees for a stronger resume, Allow for students to work in a “real-life” position while still attending classes, and to take on projects which might otherwise be impossible. As we’ve progressed our mission has changed, as we now focus on economic development of the region and job sustainability, but the original tenets are still met with vigor.

What is the Profit Equity system?

AnswerThe system is IDC’s method of taking on projects which would be capital restricted to most companies. By deferring the payment of any employee’s work until after the project is completed, IDC shared the risk and rewards with those involved. Profit Equity refers to an individual’s ownership rights to the profit from a project which they have contributed to in the past. It’s an important distinction that they do not own part of the project or have control of it, but they are entitled to a percentage of the profits for as long as their contribution is used. This is effectively a royalty payment. See all the details of the profit equity system here.

How does IDC make money on a project where the Profit Equity system is used?

AnswerBy taking a percentage of the profit. The percentage is determined based on the total profit of the project, with the distribution favoring the project contributors in early stages of the project. The full equation is included as an attachment to the Services Agreement.

When will I start to make money?

AnswerIt depends. When working for Profit Equity, usually 6 months to a year. However, many employees also help us with contract jobs, in which they are paid by the hour of as soon as the work is finished. This usually results in a biweekly pay period like many other jobs.

Why else would I want to work for IDC?

AnswerWe have a positive environment and we have fun. You can work whenever and wherever you like as long as your assigned work is completed on time. We are a great reference. You’ll likely have far more responsibility in a position here than at another job.

What do employees do for IDC?

AnswerEverything. We’re a start-up and that means filling in the gaps. While most people spend 90% of their time doing whatever was in their job descriptions, sometimes there are extraneous things that come up. Usually though, these things are fun, like representing the company at functions or helping out on another project.

What kinds of projects does IDC take on?

AnswerWe focus on technological design or engineering problems. We work in both hardware and software and have individuals that are very creative, very analytical, and those that are in between. Most all of our projects are interdisciplinary and require the cooperation of groups which have a diverse background.

What if I have an idea for a project, product, service, business idea, etc. Can you help?

AnswerYes, we can help. For those that have ideas and want to execute them but don’t have all the skills to do so, IDC is the perfect partner. After you pitch us the idea (which means doing your due diligence and ensuring that the project is financially smart to pursue), we’ll gather a team and get to work. The same Profit Equity system applies here and you will have to share, but remember that 1% of something is infinitely more than 100% of nothing. I’m not based in Rolla, Missouri, can I still work for you?

AnswerYes, we have people in eight cities in the US, we are very open to working with those who are not based in our main office location.

What tools do you use to keep track of your projects?

AnswerWe provide training and resources to use our many tools to maintain projects. All projects are maintained online through our project management software, DotProject. This allows for tracking of time, tasks, dependencies and resources throughout the project life. It also serves as an administrative tool to check in on project status at any time. For document sharing, each employee is given an @IDCProjects.com email address and corresponding Google docs/calendar access. IDC uses Google Docs extensively. For software development, we have a private Subversion and GIT repository with access control for multiple projects.

I’m interested. What forms do I need to fill out?

AnswerTo start off we have you fill out a mutual NDA, Services Agreement (contract), IRS W-9 and I-9 for Profit Equity and contract work, MO W-4 and IRS W-4 for hourly work, the direct deposit authorization, and the IDC Personnel Skills, Interests, and Goals Inventory. Please note: the inventory is extensive but used when placing you in other projects and when gauging our capability to take on new external projects.
