Barcode Scanning iPhone App Called "Made In America" Designed to Stimulate the Economy

Rolla, Missouri [04/29/2010] - On 4/29/2010, the Interdisciplinary Design Collaborative LLC (IDC) launched the "Made In America" iPhone app. Coupled with the popularity and ease of use of Apple’s iPhone, it is giving patriotic consumers a new way to ensure that they buy goods contributing to the economy of the United States. Us ing the iPhone's camera and two specialized databases, a user can view where a product is made by aligning a barcode in the viewfinder of the app. IDC is a research and development company based in Rolla, Missouri specializing in iPhone application development.

Made In America is the iPhone app that gives patriotic consumers the information they need when shopping. Buying domestically built, assembled, and designed products contributes to job growth in the US. IDC has chosen to bring this knowledge into the forefront of consumers minds when shopping by giving them an easy to use tool which quickly and accurately display the country of origin or a best approximation.

The consumer can use iPhone’s built-in camera to scan a product’s barcode (UPC and EAN types supported) and see which country it was produced in. After aligning the barcode in the viewfinder, it is interpreted and one of three possible results is displayed.  If the product scanned has been registered by the manufacturer, and verified to prove authenticity, the country the product was manufactured in will be displayed.  For increased confidence, a PDF file of the verification letter will also be available for viewing.  If the product scanned has not yet been registered, the user will have the option of selecting, from a list, which country they believe the product was made in based on the packaging. If other users have previously entered information about that product into the app, the two countries with the most votes will be displayed, along with their percentages.  Designed for those who want confidence in knowing that the products they are purchasing were made in America, finding a specific product’s country of origin is easier than ever.

Optimized for speed, Made In America uses Occipital’s RedLaser Component Toolkit which supports iPhone OS 3.1 and higher, and will work on the original iPhone, 3G, 3Gs, and essentially any future Cocoa Touch powered devices that support iPhone OS 3.1 and higher. There is no need for a macro lens or autofocus device with Made In America. Using an innovative app layout, users are able to scan again and again. There is no need to push buttons, change screens, or reset anything, just scan a product and as soon as you're ready, scan the next.

IDC will be releasing an API (Application Programming Interface) for other developers in May 2010 to submit and request data used in the Made In America App. IDC hopes that by giving free access to this data, more apps, websites or other innovative uses will follow and spread the word about the importance of buying domestic products.

IDC's business model relies on the technological talents of students at Missouri S&T that are looking for real world industry experience while still attending school. Students with specific skills are subcontracted by IDC and rely on the group's collective business acumen to capitalize on their technical prowess. Started in 2008, IDC has since launched a video production operation, carved into Apple’s iPhone app market, and won multiple government R&D grants to advance cutting edge technology in a variety of sectors.
